Ecu d'Or, ND (1515-47). Nantes Mint. Francis I. NGC MS-62. "écu d'or au soleil de Bretagne, deuxiéme type" struck at Nantes for François I. Struck on a nice round flan with a few weak spots but full legends on both sides. Soft satin luster and quite good eye appeal." This type, struck at Nantes (shown here) and Rennes, is distinguished from ''écus d'or'' struck at other mints by the presence of an ermine to the left of the shield on the obverse. This specimen was lot 20177 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, ND (1515-47). Nantes Mint. Francis I. NGC MS-62. "écu d'or au soleil de Bretagne, deuxiéme type" struck at Nantes for François I. Struck on a nice round flan with a few weak spots but full legends on both sides. Soft satin luster and quite good eye appeal." This type, struck at Nantes (shown here) and Rennes, is distinguished from écus d'or struck at other mints by the presence of an ermine to the left of the shield on the obverse. It had a face value of forty sols tornois.
