Antonio Manoel de Vilhena was the grand master of the knights of Malta 1722-36. In 1798, the Order was evicted from the island by Napoleon. The British in turn evicted the French but never returned the island to the Order, retaining it as a colony until 1964. The Order today runs charity hospitals in Europe and is headquartered in Rome. Thirty tari made a piastra or tallero. A scudo was twelve tari. This type is recorded for 1723-24 and is rare. This specimen was lot 4002 in Goldberg sale 85 (Los Angeles, June 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Malta. Scudo (12 Tari), 1724. Antonio Manoel de Vilhena. Armored bust right. Reverse: Crowned crest. Toned. Rare. ANACS graded EF-40."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM 180.
