Sincona sale 69, lot 746

This specimen was lot 746 in Sincona sale 69 (Zurich, May 2021), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$133 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT. Pius IX. 1846-1878. 2 Baiocchi 1849 / Anno IV R, Roma. Fast FDC. Kleine Flecken. (Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, double baiocchi of 1849, Rome mint. About uncirculated, Small spots.)"

The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. After 1830, five quattrini = one baiocco; 100 baiocchi = one scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929. This type was struck 1849-54 at Rome and Bologna.

Recorded mintage: 1,116,800, a common date.

Specification: 20 g, bronze, 34-35 mm diameter; this specimen 19.60 g.

Catalog reference: Ber-3323, Mont-268. Pagani 488.
