This specimen was lot 72397 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Roman Republic. 4 Baiocchi, 1849-R. Rome Mint. NGC MS-65. A sharply struck and lustrous little GEM with soft satiny surfaces that display light golden tone." The Roman Republic was a short lived state set up in the Papal States during the European wide insurrections of 1848-49. It was crushed by foreign troops and papal rule restored until 1870. This type was struck at Rome and Bologna. Enough survivors exist in high grade as to suggest that they were saved.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.95 g, .200 fine fine silver.
