from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24232
Papal St SB118-24232r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24232 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. 20 Baiocchi, 1849-B Year-III. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Sharply struck, toned and attractive." This type, struck 1848-56 from Rome and Bologna, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The edge lettering was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope, hence both "Anno III" and "Anno IV" are mentioned for 1849. The twenty baiocchi was one fifth of a scudo. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.

Recorded mintage: 21,758[2].

Specification: 5.374 g, .900 fine silver, .155 troy oz ASW, lettered edge, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Gig-78, KM-1337, Ber-3311.
