Ponterio sale 173, part of lot 1491

This specimen was part of lot 1491 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Lira to 10 Lire Denomination Set, 1946-R. KM-87/90; Mont-3; Gig-229, 277, 324, 361. Scarce. 4 pieces in set. All are NGC graded: Lira is MS-64, 2 Lire is Unc Details--Corrosion, 5 Lire is MS-62, and the 10 Lire is MS-64." The republic of Italy was organized out of the ruins of World War Two and the disaster of Mussolini's fascism. This type was issued 1946-1950 and the first two years are rare.

Recorded mintage: 104,000.
