from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 22757
Gibraltar SB118-22757r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22757 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "GIBRALTAR. Quarto, 1810. PCGS MS-63 BN Secure Holder. Large date. Bold strike with nice even chocolate brown surfaces." The British captured the rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish in 1704 and have held it since. No coinage was issued specifically for the place until 1841; this quarto, accompanied by a two quartos, is actually a merchant token. Large and small date varieties exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-Tn3.1.
