from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72359
France SB620-72359r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72359 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1691-X. Amiens Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A charming Mint State example of the type, offering some shimmering luster and hints of golden-iridescence scattered throughout." The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("écu with 8 L's") struck in Amiens during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in France in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[2] prices this date as scarce, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fn (new blanks) reported not confirmed; rf (restruck) is common.

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: KM 273.15; Dr/4 no. 616, Dr/2 no. 399, Dupl-1515A; Ci-1890; Gad-184.
