Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23430
SB121-23430r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23430 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. 5 Sucres, 1944-Mo. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. A very attractive Gem crown, this lustrous specimen presents great brilliance and some subtle amber toning. Just five have been graded finer in the PCGS census." In 1943-44, the Mexico City mint struck this type, the last silver coin struck for circulation in Ecuador, along with a two sucres. It likely was hoarded as it is very common today.

Recorded mintage: 2,600,000.

Specification: 25 g, 0.720 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-79.
