Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, part of lot 20189

This specimen was part of lot 20189 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $6,900. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BURMA. Proof Set (5 Pieces), 1949. London Mint. All PCGS Gold Shield Certified. 1) 8 Pe. PCGS PROOF-63. KM-31. 2) 4 Pe. PCGS PROOF-66. KM-30. 3) 2 Pe. PCGS PROOF-66. 4) Pe. PCGS PROOF-66. 5) 2 Pya. PCGS PROOF-65. Sold with original red display case, this impressive grouping featured a mintage of just 100 sets." Burma obtained her independence from Great Britain in 1948, the year after the British left India. The initial coinage, shown here, was based on the old 64 pe (pice) = one kyat (rupee). Later, in the 1950's, this was converted to 100 pya = one kyat. This series was struck 1949-51 and is common, tho the proofs are rare. The country was renamed Myanmar in 1989.
