Australia 1867-S sovereign

from Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 6016

This specimen was lot 6016 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $705. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1867. PCGS MS-61 Secure Holder. Nice strike with attractive luster. From the Dr. Michael Popoff Collection." This type, bearing the portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a banksia wreath, was struck at the Sydney mint 1857-70. An overdate, 1867/6. exists for this date. The total issue was in the tens of millions yet the type is scarce today, especially in nice condition. The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920.
