Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1154

This specimen was lot 1154 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €130 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR 20 sols aux insignes, 1707D, Lyon. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Main de justice et sceptre en sautoir, entre trois lis et une couronne. Fines traces d'ajustage. Très Beau/Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver twenty sols of the insignia of 1707, Lyon mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crossed scepters between three fleurs-de-lys and a crown. Fine adjustment marks, Very Fine/Extremely Fine.)"

Shown is a twenty sols aux insignes (twenty sous with insignia) struck at the Lyon mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck 1707-08 in substantial numbers but the type is scarce today. When the coin was recalled in 1710 for melting, the government paid only 14 sols each for them. This is a fairly common date.

Recorded mintage: 710,417.

Specification: 6.11 g, .833 fine silver, 26-27 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roettiers, this specimen 6,16 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 705, Dr/2 no. 464, KM 376.4, Dupl-1565; Gad-164.
