This specimen was lot 1088 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €85 (about US$121 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Charles X, cardinal de Bourbon (1589-1590), Billon liard, 1593D, Lyon. 2e type. Frappe posthume. D/ Grand C couronné. R/ Croix fleurdelisée. Rare. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, pretender Charles X, cardinal of Bourbon, 1589-90, billon liard of 1593, Lyon mint, second type, posthumous strike. Obverse: large crowned "C"; reverse: floriate cross. Rare, Very Fine.)"
This billon coin was struck by the Catholic League 1591-94 for the pretender Charles X at Lyon (shown here), Marseille and Aix. Unfortunately for the League, the cardinal died in 1590, leaving them without a candidate to oppose Henry IV. A liard was worth three deniers tournois.
