Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 748

This specimen was lot 748 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €150 (about US$209 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles le Téméraire (1467-1477), AR briquet, 1475, Anvers. D/ Lion assis à g., ten. l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Croix fleuronnée. Taches au revers. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles the Rash, 1467-77, silver briquet of 1475, Antwerp mint. Obverse: seated lion to left, supporting the arms of Burgundy; reverse: floriate cross. Stains on the reverse, Very Fine.)"

The Antwerp mint, which operated until the 1750's, used a hand as its mintmark. Briquets, double briquets and half briquets were struck from the 1470's to the 1490's. This is one of the first coins to bear dates in Arabic numerals. This type was struck 1474-76.

Recorded mintage: 1,044,805 for December 1474 to March 1476 (first emission).

Specification: 3.06 g, 0.399 fine silver, 27 mm diameter; this specimen 2,77 g.
