CNG Triton XXIX, lot 6540

This specimen was lot 6540 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $6,125. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Mughal Empire. Nur al-Din Muhammad Jahangir. AH 1014-1037 / AD 1605-1627. AR Rupee. Zodiac type, Class A. Ahmadabad mint. Dated [Farwardin] AH 1027 and [RY 13] (21 March-21 April AD 1618). Constellation of Varak/Mesha (Aries the Ram): ram, head right, recumbent left; radiate sun behind; trace of RY date below / Persian couplet, citing Jahangir and his father Akbar, and mint; AH date above. Toned, roughness, obverse delamination. Good Fine. Not suitable for NGC encapsulation." Jahangir scandalized the strict Muslims of his court by issuing a series of gold mohurs featuring the twelve animals of the zodiac. Always rare, they bring stratospheric prices when they appear at auction. Less well known but perhaps even rarer were the accompanying silver coins, including this rupee. Other zodiac rupees for AH 1027 include KM 150.11 (Leo), KM 150.2 (Aries), KM 150.5 (Taurus), KM 150.7 (Gemini) and KM 150.10 (Cancer).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.44 g, silver; this specimen 20.5 mm diameter, 11.15 g, 11 h axis.

Catalog reference: Liddle Type S-167; SACPM KM-150.2; Triton XXV, Session 6, lot 6878 (same obv. die).
