Bern (1700) 6 ducats Fr-158a
This specimen was lot 5103 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 36,000 CHF (about US$54,259 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, 6 Dukaten o. J. (um 1700), Bern. Berner Bär mit Füllhorn neben Stadtwappen. Im Umkreis die Wappen der 14 Berner Zünfte, bzw. Gesellschaften: Distelzwang, Pfistern, Schmieden, Metzgern, Obergerwern, Mittellöwen, Schuhmachern, Webern, Mohren, Kaufleuten, Zimmerleuten, Affen, Schiffleuten und Rebleuten. Rv. Mann und Frau sich über einem Altar die Hand reichend. Darunter eingepunzt die Wertangabe "6 D". Glatter Rand. Äusserst selten. Gutes vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city and canton of Bern, undated six ducats, circa 1700, Bern mint. Obverse: the Bernese bear supports a cornucopia and the cantonal arms, fourteen shields around (Distelzwang, Pfistern, Schmieden, Metzgern, Obergerwern, Mittellöwen, Schuhmachern, Webern, Mohren, Kaufleuten, Zimmerleuten, Affen, Schiffleuten and Rebleuten); reverse: a man and woman shake hands over an alter, with the value "6 D" punched in the exergue. Plain edge, extremely rare, about uncirculated.)"
This obverse, with the standing bear supporting the city arms (described in Friedberg as a "she-bear nursing") was used on eight ducats (Fr-158), six ducats (shown here), five ducats (Fr-159) and four ducats (Fr-160), all very rare. None appear on Numista.
