Sincona sale 98, lot 4109

This specimen was lot 4109 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 24,000 CHF (about US$34,812 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, 5 Dukaten 1700, Bern. Aufrecht stehender Bär mit Füllhorn, umgeben von einem Kreis mit den 14 Zunftwappen von Bern: Gesellschaft Distelzwang, Pfistern, Schmieden, Metzgern, Obergerwern, Mittellöwen, Schuhmachern, Webern, Mohren, Kaufleuten, Zimmerleuten, Affen, Schiffleuten und Rebleuten. Rv. Ein Mann und eine Frau reichen sich über einem Altar die Hand. Oben strahlende Sonne mit Lorbeerkranz, unten die Jahreszahl. Glatter Rand. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city and canton of Bern, five ducats of 1700, Bern mint. Obverse: An upright bear with a cornucopia, surrounded by a circle with the 14 guild coats of arms of Bern: the Distelzwang Society, Pfistern, Blacksmiths, Butchers, Obergerwern, Mittellöwen, Shoemakers, Weavers, Moors, Merchants, Carpenters, Monkeys, Boatmen, and Vintners. Reverse: A man and a woman hold hands over an altar; above, a shining sun with a laurel wreath; below, the year. Smooth edge. Extremely rare, Extremely Fine.)"

This obverse, with the standing bear supporting the city arms (described in Friedberg as a "she-bear nursing") was used on eight ducats (Fr-158), six ducats (Fr-158a), five ducats (shown here) and four ducats (Fr-160), all very rare. None appear on Numista.
