This specimen was lot 979 in Jean Elsen sale 131 (Brussels, December 2016), where it sold for €120 (about US$151 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''ITALIE, TOSCANE, François Ier de Médicis (1574-1587), AR piastre, 1584, Florence. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Saint Jean-Baptiste deb. de f., t. à d., levant la main et ten. une croix. Rare Traces de monture. Beau.'' (grand duchy of Tuscany, Francis I de Medici (1574-87), silver piastra of 1584, Florence mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: St. John the Baptist strides forward, head to right, raising one hand and bearing a cross. Trace of mounting, fine.)"</blockquote> After the Florentine republic collapsed, it was reconstituted as the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by the Medicis until 1723. The type is listed in Davenport for 1577-85. Like most Italian crowns of the sixteenth century, it is rare.
