This specimen was lot 916 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''ESPAGNE, Alphonse XIII (1886-1931), AR 5 pesetas, 1896(96)PG-V. Petits coups. Avec brillant de frappe. Superbe à Fleur de Coin.'' (Spain, Alfonso XIII, 1886-1931, silver five pesetas of 1896. Small nicks, with mint luster, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"</blockquote> In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. This design, issued while the king was a boy, was struck in large numbers 1896-99 and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine.
