This specimen was lot 72704 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $85. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "SPAIN. 4 Maravedis, 1788. Segovia Mint. Charles III. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. A well struck and attractive example of the type with slightly mottled brown to dark brown patina throughout." The [[Spain|Spanish]] mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This four maravedis was worth 1/68 of a dollar; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Segovia 1772-88 and in Madrid 1770-71 and was accompanied by copper [[Spain 1773-Seg maravedi|one]], two and [[Spain 1778-Seg 8 maravedis|eight maravedis]]. The type is not rare but scarce in nice condition. This denomination was also struck for Charles IV in 1788.
