This type was struck in Cuzco for the short-lived state of South Peru. It was struck 1837-39 in various varieties and is only somewhat scarcer than the regular issue of [[Peru]]. For 1837, assayers "BA" and "MS" are noted along with a variation in the reverse legend ("FEDERACION" vs. "CONFEDERACION"). The complete span of Peru standing liberty eight reales runs 1825-55. This specimen was lot 1352 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "PERU. South Peru. 8 Reales, 1837-BA. Cuzco Mint. NGC MS-62. 'FEDERACION'. Incuse edge lettering. Lustrous with hints of light toning."
