The first specimen was lot 3465 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 19,000 CHF (about US$25,107 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Guldiner 1501, Solothurn. Dickabschlag aus den Stempeln des Talers. Standeswappen umgeben von neun Lilien. Darüber ein auffliegender Doppeladler. Im inneren Schriftkreis gotische Schrift. Im äusseren Kreis die 12 Solothurner Vogteiwappen, bei 1 Uhr beginnend mit Halten, Altreu, Flumenthal, Falkenstein, Rotberg, Olten, Gösgen, Palm, Thierstein, Dorneck, Gilgenberg und Buchegg. Zwischen den Wappen Lilien. Rv. Der heilige Ursus nach rechts in einem Lilien-Vielpass. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Simmen bezeichnet dieses Stück als "4 Dicken schwerer Taler 1501". Exemplar der Auktion Leu Numismatik 66, Zürich, Mai 1996, Los 64 (Sammlung Simmen), sowie der Sammlung Bachofen 1194 und der Sammlung Harscher.'' Obverse: Coat of arms surrounded by nine lilies, above it a soaring double-headed eagle, in the inner circle Gothic script, in the outer circle the arms of the 12 Solothurn bailiwicks, starting at 1 o'clock with Halten, Altreu, Flumenthal, Falkenstein, Rotberg, Olten, Gösgen, Palm, Thierstein, Dorneck, Gilgenberg and Buchegg. Lilies between the coats of arms. Reverse: Saint Ursus to the right in a lily-filled polylobe. Of the highest rarity, Very fine.)"</blockquote> The second specimen was lot 4427 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 29,000 CHF (about US$42,065 including buyers' fees). The catalog description<sup>[2]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, Guldiner 1501, Solothurn. Stadtwappen, oben damasziert und oben eingeschnitten, darüber Doppeladler mit Nimben. Seitlich des Wappens kleine Halbbögen als Verzierung und in einem inneren Schriftkreis in antiqua ° MONETA ° - ° SOLODOR ° . im äusseren Kreis 12 Vogteiwappen. Rv. Hl. Ursus mit Nimbus nach rechts in einem Harnisch mit flatternder Kreuzfahne und Schwert. Breite Bogeneinfassung. Zwischen den Füssen eine fünfblättrige Rosette. Die Jahreszahl am Ende der Umschrift. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Simmen, Auktion Leu 66, Zürich, Mai 1996, Los 65 (als vermutlich das zweite bekannte Exemplar). Exemplar der Auktion F. Obverse: City arms, damasqued and incised at the top, above a nimbate double-headed eagle. Small semicircles decorate the sides of the coat of arms, and within an inner circle inscribed in antiqua ° MONETA ° - ° SOLODOR ° . In the outer circle, 12 bailiwick arms. Reverse: St. Ursus with halo to the right, in armor with fluttering cross banner and sword. Wide polylobe border. Between the feet, a five-petal rosette and the date at the end of the inscription. Of the highest rarity, Very Fine-Extremely Fine.)"</blockquote> The very earliest thalers were called guldiner as they were silver coins equal to one goldgulden. By the mid fifteenth century, large silver coins were divided into guldenthalers (worth sixty kreuzer) and thalers (72 kreuzer). The first example was likely intended to be a 1¼ guldiner; such a coin was struck in [[Sitten 1501 1-1/4 guldiner Dav-A8788|Sitten]]. Guldiner of normal weight (28-29 g) exist of this type.
