This specimen was lot 1123 in Sincona sale 50 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 4,400 CHF (about US$5,307 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Sizilien. Karl III. von Österreich, 1730-1734. Oncia (30 Tari) 1733. Büste nach recht mit Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Phönix aus den Flammen emporsteigend. Selten. Minimale Spuren der Reinigung (Tuschzahl) vor dem Gesicht. Vorzüglich.'' (kingdom of Sicily, Charles III of Austria, 1730-34, oncia or thirty tari of 1733. Obverse: laureate bust right; reverse: a phoenix rising from the flames. Rare, Minor traces of cleaning (ink nr.) in front of the face, Extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. In the interim, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor 1711-40, was also king of Sicily 1720-34.
