This specimen was lot 230 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 4,250 CHF (about US$5,100 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Sachsen, Herzogtum, Friedrich III., Georg und Johann, 1500-1507. Goldgulden o. J. Leipzig. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich.'' ([[Germany]], duchy of Saxony, Frederick III, George and John, 1500-07, undated goldgulden, Leipzig mint. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. Gold, however, is not so common. This rare type was issued by the Ernestine branch, not the Albertine branch. The Ernestine branch splintered after 1554 into the Saxon duchies.
