This specimen was lot 2134 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €14,000 (about US$19,484 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SACHSEN-COBURG UND GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, Ernst I. 1826-1844. Dukat 1831. GOLD. RR Nur 600 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz/Stempelglanz. Erworben 1953 bei der Firma Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. Frankfurt/Main.'' ([[Germany]], duchy of [[German States, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha|Saxe-Coburg-Gotha]], Ernest I, 1826-44, ducat of 1831. Very rare, only 600 pieces struck. Choice example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"</blockquote> This Thuringian duchy was formed when the duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg died in 1826 and the duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld traded Saalfeld for Gotha. The result survived until the end of the Wilhelmine empire in 1918. One of Ernest's younger sons married queen Victoria and became Albert, Prince Consort.
