This specimen was lot 23505 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Portugal|PORTUGAL]]. 40 Reis (Pataco), 1833. Lisbon Mint. Maria II. NGC MS-63 Brown. Absolutely unheard of quality, this choice piece offers rather alluring red-brown surfaces along with some underlying brilliance. For the collector of fine Portuguese issues, assuredly one which will not fly under the radar." The pataco or forty réis was struck both by Miguel I ([[Portugal 1833 40 reis KM-391|KM 391]]) and Maria II (shown here) in 1833. This rare variety with the wide rim is much scarcer than the regular issue pataco of Maria II ([[Portugal 1833 40 reis KM-402|KM 402]]). It may be a pattern. In 1836, the coinage was reformed and made decimal.
