This specimen was lot 3130 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €550 (about US$741 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Pius VII. 1800-1823. Doppia A VIII (1807/1808), Rom. 5,02 g Feingold. GOLD. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Goldpatina, vorzüglich.'' (Papal States, Pius VII, 1800-23, doppia of year 8 (1807-08), Rome mint. Very attractive example with handsome gold patina, extremely fine.)"</blockquote> This type was issued 1801-09 for Pius VII (1799-1823). After striking zecchini fairly steadily 1738-84, the denomination was suddenly dropped in favor of a series of ''mezze doppie'' ([[Papal States 1787 1/2 doppia d'oro Fr-247|Fr-247]]), ''doppie'' (Fr-248) and ''due doppie'' (Fr-245). The type doesn't fit into the already chaotic papal coinage system nor does it match the doppie of her neighbors, such as Naples, Parma and Sardinia. The series was also minted in Bologna (see Fr-249). During 1808-14, the Papal States were annexed to Napoleon's empire.
