This specimen was lot 553 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $499.38. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "FRANCE. Nevers & Rethel. Ecu, 1614. PCGS FINE-15 Secure Holder. Charles II de Gonzaga (1601-37). Toned, small planchet crack at 2 o'clock." The county of Rethel and the duchy of Nevers, located in northeast [[France]], were the heritage of the dukes of Mantua, who struck coins for the region until 1653. The écus are generally rare but this one is only scarce.
