This specimen was lot 640 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,710 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''PROVINCIALE MUNTEN - Dukaton of zilveren rijder 1740, Silver, Holland Ruiter naar rechts boven provinciewapentje MON: FCED: BELG: PRO: HOLL: IN USUM SOCIET: IND: ORIENT. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal boven de kroon, VOC in cartouche. Gladde rand. RRR. Uiterst zeldzaam Rand volledig ingeklopt ter versiering. Zeer fraai +.'' ([[Netherlands East Indies]], silver ducaton or silver rider of 1740, Holland mint. Obverse: mounted knight charges to right over the provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality, date above, VOC in cartouche; smooth edge. Extremely rare with decorations hammered into the edge. Choice very fine.)
<p>''De rand van dit exemplaar is uiterst opmerkelijk versierd met cirkels met kruizen erin. De versiering is ogenschijnlijk aangebracht door een klein stempel over de gehele rand in te kloppen. Dat dit patroon met de hand en niet machinaal is aangebracht blijkt uit de onregelmatige plaatsing en diepte van de stempels. De pons zelf doet enigszins denken aan de verschillende soorten klopjes die op diverse munten die circuleerden in de Oost worden aangetroffen. Dit, gecombineerd met het gegeven dat de rand met de hand is versierd, maakt het aanneembaar dat deze munt ergens in Azie is bewerkt. Daar wij geen tweede exemplaar met dergelijke rand kennen, is het niet duidelijk waarom dit gebeurde. Mogelijk gaat het hier om een geimproviseerde 'kabelrand' om snoeien te voorkomen; het zou evengoed om een private bewerking kunnen gaan om het stuk als geschenk te kunnen weggeven.'' (The edge of this specimen is most remarkably decorated with crossed annulets. The decoration is apparently applied by punching in a small stamp repeatedly along the entire edge. The fact that this pattern was applied by hand and not by machine is evident from the irregular placement and depth of said punches. The punch itself is somewhat reminiscent of the different types of countermarks found on various coins that circulated in the East. This, combined with the fact that the edge is applied by hand, makes it plausible that this coin was modified somewhere in East Asia. Since we do not know of a second specimen with such an edge, the exact reason behind the application remains unclear. It may represent an improvised 'edge reeding' to prevent clipping; it could just as well be a private modification to be used as a presentation piece.)"</p></blockquote> The United East India Company (VOC) had ducatons struck at Holland (1728-41), [[Netherlands East Indies 1741 ducaton KM-130.1|Westfriesland]] (1728, 1738-41), Zeeland, Utrecht and Gelderland for trade with the Indies.
