<br><br>Military Payment Certificates were currency issued by the United States Government to its servicemen in hostile areas. <br>
It has been suggested that the reason for this and the overprint currencies of World War II is to prevent looting and desecration of corpses of soldiers killed in battle by restricting use to service personel.

The more generally accepted reason was to thwart black marketeering with the local populace outside the stations and bases which was a serious problem in World War Two. The sudden influx of military personnel with their full wallets and piles of readily pilferable goods proved to be an attractive nuisance to the local criminal element in many areas.
