This specimen was lot 42493 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $141. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "MALTA. 30 Tari, 1790. Emmanuel de Rohan (1775-97). NGC AU Details--Mount Removed. As Grand Master of the Order of Saint John, Emmanuel de Rohan revised the legal code and otherwise brought a degree of enlightenment to the island of Malta. Evidence of mount removal at twelve o'clock on reverse. A few adjustment marks on the obverse, and with a decent portrait. An impressive large silver crown size coin from the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Pedigree: From the Ray Czahor Collection." Malta, an island between [[Italy]] and Tunisia was ruled by the Knights of St. John from the 1500's to their ouster by Napoleon in 1798. After Napoleon's fall, the British occupied the island as a base until the 1960's, when Malta became an independent republic. The Knights of St. John, now the Order of Malta, still exist but are based in Rome where they run a hospital. The Maltese used currency derived from their neighbors the Sicilians; 20 grani = 1 tari, 12 tari = 1 scudo. This scarce type is listed for [[Malta 1781 30 tari Dav-1608|1781]], 1785, 1789 and 1790.
