The first specimen was lot 1297 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,437 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''FRANCE, LORRAINE, Duché, Charles III (1545-1608), AR tallar (écu), 1569, Nancy. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné de Lorraine, entouré de sept écussons couronnés. Rare Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe.'' (duchy of Lorraine, Charles III, 1545-1608, silver thaler of 1569, Nancy mint. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms of Lorraine surrounded by seven other crowned shields. Rare, nice toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> The second specimen was lot 3537 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description<sup>[2]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Lothringen, Herzogtum, Karl III. 1545-1608. Taler 1569. Flon 60. Dav-9385. Sehr selten. NGC XF40.'' (France, duchy of Lorraine, Charles III, 1545-1608, thaler of 1569. Very rare, extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Altho the duke doubtless spoke French, he did not consider himself a subject of the king of [[France]] but rather of the emperor. The province would not fall under French domination until after the Thirty Years War and was not annexed until the death of the last duke in 1766.
