This specimen was lot 1845 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it sold for €4,700 (about US$6,636 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''FRANCE, LORRAINE, Duché, Charles III (1545-1603), AR écu (Tallar), 1557, sans nom d'atelier (Nancy). D/ + CAROL'· D: G: CALA: LOTHO: BAR GVEL: DVX B. cuirassé du jeune duc à d. R/ Ecu de Lorraine couronné, entouré de sept écus aux armes des quartiers de l'écu ducal. Extrêmement rare Petite contremarque H dans le champ au droit. Très Beau à Superbe.'' (France, duchy of Lorraine, Charles III (1545-1603), 1557 silver écu or thaler, Nancy mint. Obverse: armored young bust to right; reverse: crowned arms of Lorraine surrounded by seven lesser shields. Extremely rare, countermark "H" in obverse field, very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Altho the duke doubtless spoke French, he did not consider himself a subject of the king of [[France]] but rather of the emperor. The province would not fall under French domination until after the Thirty Years War and was not annexed until the death of the last duke in 1766.
