This specimen was lot 31870 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Italy]]. [[Italy, Lombardy & Venetia|Lombardy-Venetia]]. Franz I of Austia Scudo 1824-M MS65+ NGC, Milan mint, Obv. Laureate but of Austrian Emperor Franz II (I). Rev. Crowned double-headed eagle with arms on breast. Impressively struck, the devices cloaked in vibrant cerulean and seafoam tones over surfaces demonstrating clear underlying luster." The kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia was assembled by the Austrians to provide a unified administration for the Italian territories under their rule. This comprised the former duchies of Milan and Mantua and the republic of Venice. Milan, under Spanish rule from the 1500's, fell to the [[Austria]]ns in 1714 and held by them until 1797 when Napoleon seized it. Napoleon gave Venice (until then independent) to Austria as compensation for her loss of Milan and Belgium. The area passed back and forth between the French and Austrians until the Congress of Vienna in 1814-15, when Metternich awarded it to Austria. Austria ruled it until 1866, when it passed to the new kingdom of Italy. This type was issued at [[Lombardy-Venetia 1822-A scudo Dav-8|Vienna]] 1821-24; from [[Lombardy-Venetia 1826-V scudo Dav-8|Venice]] 1822-32; and Milan, 1822-31. The denomination, worth six [[Lombardy-Venetia 1822-M lira|lire]], was last struck in 1853.
