This specimen was lot 958 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,196 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Hildesheim, BISTUM Sedisvakanz 1688. Reichstaler 1688, mit Titel Leopolds I. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich.'' (bishopric of Hildesheim, vacant seat, thaler of 1688, in the name of Leopold I. Attractive example with fine patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Both the city and the bishop of Hildesheim issued thalers in the seventeenth century, generally rare. This one was issued between the death of bishop Maximilian Henry of Bavaria (1650-88) and his successor, Jobst Edmund von Brabeck (1688-1702).
