This specimen was lot 21403 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"GUATEMALA. [[Guatemala]] - Spain. 8 Reales, ND (1840). PCGS Genuine--Holed, EF Details. Countermark: EF Details. Issued by decree of 31 October to 20 November 1840. Countermark: Type II, radiant personification of the sun above mountains. Applied to the reverse of a 1683-BR, Segovia Mint 8 Reales of Charles II ([[Spain 1683-Seg BR 8 reales|KM-191.3]]). A VERY RARE and seldom encountered host for the type, this specimen presents an alluring tone with great offsetting to the devices. The countermark, though somewhat weak, is still clearly identifiable, and the noted hole--a rather commonplace aspect for these issues--is easily overlooked."</blockquote>  This is a foreign eight reales counterstamped in Guatemala in 1840. It is a 'Type II', meaning that only the obverse was stamped. This particular method was used only in 1839. Foreign crowns were counterstamped from 1839-1841, during a time at which the [[Central American Republic]] was in a state of collapse and the country of Guatemala was emerging as an independent entity.
