This specimen was lot 3034 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $144. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Germany|GERMANY]]: Kaiserreich, 5 pfennig, 1902-A, a lovely proof quality example! PCGS graded Proof 63." This coin is a five pfennig from a type issued 1890-1915 from the Berlin (mintmark "A", shown here), Munich (mintmark "D"), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of [[Saxe-Meiningen 1902-D 2 mark|two mark]] and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. Wartime shortages forced the government to convert the coin to iron in 1915-18.
