This specimen was lot 869 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,325 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''BISTUM Johann Franz Eckner von Kapfing und Lichteneck, 1695-1727. Reichstaler 1709, Augsburg. R Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich.'' (bishopric of Freising, Johann Franz Eckner von Kapfing und Lichteneck, 1695-1727, thaler of 1709, Augsburg mint. Scarce, nice patina, choice extremely fine.)"</blockquote> This is one of three thalers issued by the bishops of Freising in the eighteenth century. Freising, another postage stamp state, lay on the Isar river downstream of Munich and was entirely surrounded by Bavaria. The bulk was annexed to Bavaria in 1802 during the Napoleonic mediatization.
