This specimen was lot 2205 in Goldberg sale 110 (Los Angeles, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Great Britain. Groat, Nd. Henry IV, 1399-1413. Light coinage, 1412-13. Mint mark, cross pattee. London. Pellet to left. 10 arches to tressure. Very Rare. Very Fine. Officially recorded as part of the Eye hoard in Suffolk found 2010 with a total of 477 coins that were returned to the finders." In the late Middle Ages, as commerce revived, the silver penny was found to be inadequate. The groat, worth fourpence, was introduced. Immediately popular, it was imitated in numerous countries under many names (French ''gros'', Italian ''grosso'', German ''groschen''). This type occurs in several varieties, varying in the design of the crown but all are rare.
