This specimen was lot 71053 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $65. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "INDIA. PORTUGUESE INDIA. Diu. 1/4 Atia, 1778. Maria I & Pedro III (1777-86). PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details Secure Holder. Crude strike with signs of burial as noted by the 'Environmental Damage' on the slab insert, but the details are mostly clear. Overall a presentable example with nice patina." The [[Portugal|Portuguese]] were the first European power to make direct contact with [[India]]. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By 1778, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This quarter atia was struck 1778 only. Forty atia = one rupee = 600 reis = 750 bazarucos.
