This specimen was lot 31165 in Heritage Sale 3115 (Chicago, May 2024), where it sold for $3,720. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Denmark]]: Christian III Joachimstaler 1537 VF Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Copenhagen mint. Among the most elusive Danish Talers, the piece at hand is certainly a prize of any cabinet, with the small handful to come to market in the last two decades almost exclusively witnessed in comparable conditions. Struck at the conclusion of an incredibly tumultuous period in Danish and Swedish history, the issue endures as a historic relic and is certain to entice even the most seasoned of specialists." All of the examples of this type shown in the auction archives since 2008 have been this date.

Kunker sold one in September 2003 (sale 86, lot 1966, realized 5,300 euro), at which time they commented, <blockquote>"''Der Sohn König Frederiks I. (1523-1533), seit dem Wormser Reichstag von 1521 Anhänger der Reformation, vertrat seinen Vater nach dessen Regierungsantritt in den schleswig-holsteinischen Herzogtümern. Nach dem Tod Frederiks I. mußte sich Christian III. die Anerkennung als König von Dänemark und Norwegen in der sogenannten Grafenfehde (1534-1536) erkämpfen. Die Stadt Lübeck organisierte ein großangelegtes, militärisches Unternehmen unter Führung der Grafen Christoph von Oldenburg und Johann von Hoya, um den 1523 aus Dänemark vertriebenen und seit 1532 in Norwegen gefangen gehaltenen König Christian II. (1513-1523) zu befreien. Ziel war die Festigung Lübecks als Handelsvormacht im Ostseeraum. Lübeck und die Grafen eroberten Anfang 1534 innerhalb kurzer Zeit Kopenhagen und die dänischen Inseln. Als sich Kronprinz Christian III. mit Gustav Vasa von Schweden verbündet hatte und am 14. Juli 1534 zum König gewählt worden war, änderte sich die Lage. Nach der Landschlacht am Ochsenberge auf Fünen und der Seeschlacht bei Svendborg mußte der Lübecker Rat König Christian III. im Frieden von Hamburg vom 14. Februar 1536 anerkennen. Nachdem sich Kopenhagen am 29. Juli 1536 ergeben hatte, konnte Münzmeister Reynold Junge, der zuvor in Aarhus und Roskilde gearbeitet hatte, auch wieder die Münzstätte in der Hauptstadt benutzen. Als größtes Silbernominal wurden Joachimstaler wie das vorliegende Stück geprägt, die heute nur noch selten angeboten werden.'' (The son of King Frederik I (1523-1533), a supporter of the Reformation since the Diet of Worms in 1521, represented his father in the Schleswig-Holstein duchies after his father came to power. After the death of Frederik I, Christian III had to fight for recognition as King of Denmark and Norway in the so-called Counts' Feud (1534-1536). The city of Lübeck organized a large-scale military operation under the leadership of Counts Christoph of Oldenburg and Johann of Hoya to free King Christian II (1513-1523), who had been expelled from Denmark in 1523 and held prisoner in Norway since 1532. The aim was to consolidate Lübeck as a trading power in the Baltic region. Lübeck and the counts quickly conquered Copenhagen and the Danish islands at the beginning of 1534. After the Danish king had allied himself with Gustav Vasa of Sweden and was elected king on July 14, 1534, the situation changed. After the land battle at Ochsenberge on Funen and the naval battle at Svendborg, the Lübeck council had to recognize King Christian III in the Peace of Hamburg of February 14, 1536. After Copenhagen surrendered on July 29, 1536, mint master Reynold Junge, who had previously worked in Aarhus and Roskilde, was able to use the mint in the capital again. Joachimstalers, such as the present piece, were minted as the largest silver denomination and are rarely offered today.)"</blockquote>
