This specimen exemplifies the dreadful state of modern coin design. The drab, low relief design, accentuated by the dull material, failed to inspire any but the most devoted collectors of Central American coins. Neighboring Nicaragua, under the earnest if incompetent Sandinista regime, managed to feature the rebel general Augusto Sandino on its [[Nicaragua 1980 cordoba|coins]] of the 1980's. This type was struck 1982-84 and is accompanied by one, [[Costa Rica 1983 5 colones|five]], ten and [[Costa Rica 1983 20 colones|twenty colones]] issues. Later series of the 1990's added the fifty and hundred colones as inflation eroded the power of the currency. This date was minted in London in sufficient quantity to put 32 pieces in the pocket of every Costa Rican resident at the time.
