This specimen was lot 3681 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €32,000 (about US$43,130 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''KÖLN, ERZBISTUM, Joseph Klemens von Bayern zum zweiten Mal, 1714-1723. Dukat 1723, Bonn. IOS · CL · D · G · ARCH · - · COL · S · R · I · P · EL · B · D + Brustbild l. mit Kalotte, umgelegtem Mantel und Bischofskreuz, darunter die Signatur F · W · (Friedrich Wendels, Münzmeister in Bonn 1698-1728)//CASPAR : MELCHIOR · BALTHASAR · Die Heiligen Drei Könige beten die vor ihnen sitzende Maria mit dem Kind an, r. steht Josef, im Hintergrund zwei Kamele und drei Lanzen, oben der Stern von Bethlehem, im Abschnitt die römische Jahreszahl MDCCXXIII und Verzierung zwischen zwei Kreuzen. Extremely rare, very attractive example with fine gold patina, minor crack, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"</blockquote> The city of Cologne issued its own [[Cologne 1724-HK ducat Fr-773|ducats]] separate from the archbishop. Both the city and the archbishopric were mediatized in 1801 and handed to the French Republic and later Napoleon's empire. At the Congress of Vienna, the city became part of the Prussian Rhineland.
