This specimen was lot 32665 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $780. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Chios. Anonymous gold Imitative Zecchino ND (1346-1364) MS64 PCGS. AZ Є (retrograde) KDAN DVC | S (on its side) | N | V | Є | N | Є | I, doge kneeling left before St. Mark (standing right), who hands him a banner bearing a cross, DVX to right / ZITT XPЄ DAT DT | KOIZIZ TO Є (retrograde) VCDTT, Christ in glory motif, 4 stars to left, 4-5 to right. In a scarce state of preservation, with glistening golden surfaces. Mislabelled on slab as Achaia." In the late middle ages, before the advent of the Ottoman Turks, many of the Aegean islands were under the rule of various petty princelings. To gain wider acceptance of their coinage, minters often imitated better-known coins such as the Venetian ducat.
