This specimen was lot 1555 in Jean Elsen sale 118 (Brussels, September 2013), where it sold for €280 (about US$441 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "CEYLON (BRITISH), George III (1760-1820), AR 96 stivers, 1808, Very Fine." This enigmatic coin, with its bold figure of an elephant, is listed for 1808-09. The SCWC notes that four stivers made a fanam and 12 fanams a rupee, making this coin equal to two rupees, which seems too high a face value for this type. The stiver was a holdover from Dutch rule.
