This specimen is an aluminum five francs, part of a series of aluminum fractionals issued starting in the 1970's. Burundi fell under German domination in the 1890's then passed to [[Belgium]] in 1919. She obtained indepemdence in 1961. Although blessed with unusually fertile soil for Africa, the country remains mired in poverty. Her neighbor to the north, Rwanda, was the site of a horrific genocide in the 1990's.
