This specimen was lot 3644 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,050 (about US$3,940 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''STADT Goldgulden 1630, mit Titel Ferdinands II. GOLD. RR Etwas Belag, sehr schön-vorzüglich.'' ([[Germany]], city of Brunswick, gold gulden of 1630, in the name of Ferdinand II. Rare, some deposits, very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> This type was issued 1622-36, followed by a ducat (KM 35) for 1638-60. The city opposed subjection to the rule of the Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel dukes, a conflict which broke out into open warfare on several occasions. The dukes finally besieged, captured and sacked the city, ending its independence. Altho the specification shown here is that of a ducat, the goldgulden was usually slightly lighter and lower in fineness.
