This specimen was lot 73113 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $552. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Bolivia|BOLIVIA]]. 1/2 Sol, 1856-PTS FJ. Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-65. A magnificent piece, alight with satiny resplendence and displaying surfaces of obvious originality. Fully Gem and desirable as such." The Potosi mint produced these debased one half sol coins 1856-58. These coins, along with contemporary issues from La Paz mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close. This variety has a blurred "½" added to the reverse between the mintmark and the date; KM 118.1 lacks this. This variety is more common for 1856.
