This specimen was lot 1072 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $17,250. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"1841 LR 4 escudos. Potosi mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Bright and lustrous yellow gold with exceptional eye appeal. The reflective fields show some light handling marks but remain flashy and fresh. Nicely struck. A very elusive one year type in any grade, this piece may be among the very finest known. In the Newcomer sale, Wayte Raymond called this piece 'Mint State and very rare.' It sold for $175 in 1935. Harry F. Williams, whose collection formed the principal source for the Newcomer collection of Latin American coins, knew of only the Salbach (Schulman, 1911) specimen, and this could be the same coin. An important rarity in the Bolivian series. From J.C. Morgenthau and Co. (Wayte Raymond)'s sale of the Waldo Newcomer collection, February 1935, Lot 30 (plated); John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942. Plated in Wayte Raymond's ''The Gold Coins of South America'', 1936; and in the serial published in ''Coin Collector's Journal'', February 1937, Vol. 3, #11, p. 241."</blockquote>

While silver coins from [[Bolivia]] exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, [[Colombia]] may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by [[Peru]]. Bolivia, [[Chile]] and [[Guatemala]] are minor sources. This type was minted 1841 only.
