This specimen was lot 2710 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Doppelgulden 1892. Wien. Vorzüglich.'' (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, double gulden of 1892, Vienna mint. Extremely fine.)"</blockquote> When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This type of double florin was struck 1872-92. This date is common, despite the small mintage, suggesting that it was extensively saved.
